In December, 2009, we had five days of temperatures in the single digits and teens quickly freezing every drop of water coming off the bluffs of the Gorge.

While that is not in itself all that unusual, it is remarkably rare that it's not accompanied by road conditions that shut down I-84 and the Historic Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway, and make it impossible to get to the Falls.
Not to mention the infamous Corbett wind bringing down iced trees and making dangerous footing.

Beautiful blue skies, combined with dry pavement and windless days lead me to take two days off of work and spend the time in the Columbia and Sandy River Gorges hiking with camera and dogs, and just enjoying the beautiful  patterns and sculptures created by moving water in a frozen environment.
