A child is not the sum total of genetics and upbringing.  They come with a third, unknown, element that is exclusively theirs.

That piece is what makes us whole.  It is the part that screams for discovery and understanding and which stands by, watching and waiting,  for our awareness to touch it.  It is the soul of us - as unquantified and inalterable as our genetics or history.  We can scribble or paint or enamel over the top of it, but the base doesn't change.  It is only what we create in the working with it.

My art functions in the same way.  It is, in some real sense, its own - an entity that found me.  I had no intention of art in 1999.  A scribble showed up and I followed.  Paint and a brush and a surface and I followed.  Woodstain and I followed and can't even tell you where I found it.

Walks in the woods to a picture I want to hold to an experiment about something else altoghether and I followed and there were Mirrors.

I am not creating an image, it is not an intention.  I am finding it.  I don't start with a messag,  I discover meaning for myself in the process.
Sometimes long after.

None of that negates my contribution - it simply acknowledges that there is something else in play.
